Tips & Techniques

Four-Square Breathing

Also called box breathing. An excellent breathing technique that helps to manage anxiety and can help reduce panic attacks. This works to help reduce your heart rate and regain rhythm and focus. Breathe in through your nose all the way to the bottom of your belly for 4 seconds, hold for 4, breathe out slowly through your mouth like you’re blowing out a candle for 4, and hold breath empty for 4 before inhaling again. Repeat 3-4 times.

Books

  • "Facing Codependence" 2nd edition, by Pia Mellody

This book has changed how I practice therapy. Helps explain what codependence is and is not - hint: it’s NOT a bad word! - and helps you understand why we act the way we do and how to change it. Available where books are sold.

  • "Running on Empty: Overcoming Childhood Emotional Neglect" by Dr. Jonice Webb

An excellent book that discusses childhood emotional neglect and attachment issues that help influence why we act the way we do. Many people have read this book and say “my goodness, it’s like they were describing me and my family. I had no idea there was a name for this.” Available where books are sold. She also has a website with additional information: https://drjonicewebb.com/
